Lisa and I have been hard at work fixing up our home. We always seem to be so busy, but we decided that we deserved to carve out some time to fix up our biggest investment - our house. These before/after pictures chronicle our project. Here are the home renovation photos!

Vaction pictures! The first few pictures were taken at a rest stop on our way to the beach. The pictures taken at Spinners Restaurant were shot just before and while we ate dinner. The whole restaurant is about 130 feet up, and it slowly spins (1 hour 45 minutes to make a complete rotation). We lucked out and spun into a nice sunset while we ate. That sunset didn't compare to the one we saw the next night, though. The last 6 pictures were taken Sunday night. It was the most breathtaking sunset I've ever seen. Vaction: Treasure Island, Florida

Finally, some new shots of my home office. It's a real mess, but I'm always working and have no time to clean. Also, I the walls are badly in need of fresh paint - I have not painted in there since I quit smoking a little over 3 years ago and the walls are yellow from all the smoke.

I just realized that I haven't posted any pictures from our garden yet this year. Here are some pictures from our garden that Lisa took today...

Our new Panasonic High Definition 53" widescreen TV was delivered this week. I also picked up a Panasonic progressive scan DVD player. After I calibrated the set using Avia, the results were nothing less than stunning. Rock solid image, bright picture, deep blacks, accurate colors, incredible clarity...I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor. The picture below does not even come close to doing it justice. This Panasonic HDTV, combined with my SVS subwoofer (and some good popcorn), really brings the movie experience home. Highly recommended (model PT-53WX42). Just incredible.

Happy new year everyone! This year I'll be spending my spare time working on a dedicated home theater room with the help of my friend Les. I'll be posting plenty pictures over the next few months as we work on it. Here is the planned design of the room. Unfortunately the room is a little smaller than I'd like, but short of adding a new room to the house this is the best I have to work with for now. Suggestions, comments and/or questions are welcomed!

The dogs are as anxious as I am waiting for UPS to deliver the new SVS subwoofer. Time to burn some energy play fighting! BTW, Loki and Turtle are best friends. They have never once been in a real fight, and they trust each other completely. Their playing took some getting used to, believe me!
Turtle makes her first mistake by going to her back (she is not trained in the art of Back-Fighting, while Loki is a 7th degree Master Back-Fighter).

The Minerva project is almost complete (see below). The quality of the multicast video is outstanding, and the captured video is indistinguishable from the source material. I highly recommend the Minerva VNP 201. In other news, we're switching our backup circuit from Qwest to a new DS3 from TWTC (brought in on TWTC fiber, using ATM).

Another 8 months have flown by since my last update. Shortly after my last update, my job title changed from Programmer to Network Administrator. My life is mostly LANs, WANs, switches, routers and fiber. Our network consists primarily of Cisco equipment. Our two core routers are a Cisco 7513 and a Cisco 7000. We have dozens of 2924-XL-EN switches, which are deployed throughout the network. We use Cisco 4500M and 2500 series routers for our remote T1s, which are all over Orlando at area hotels, businesses, apartments and resorts. For dialup, shotgun & ISDN services we use the Ascend 4004 and 4048 Max units. I also use an old Livingston Portmaster 2E for OOB serial control of the various devices in the main racks. Our primary bandwidth is a DS3 from Cable & Wireless, which is brought in on Bell South fiber (OC-12) and terminates into a Larscom T45 IDSU. Our backup provider is Qwest, which is also brought in on Bell South fiber. Our incomming PRI lines are from Intermedia and OTC. Our network is autonomous, and uses BGP-4 to ensure (mostly) seamless and automatic routing updates in the event of a problem. Cable & Wireless has proven to be an excellent provider, with 99.98% uptime and a well-maintained, fast network. Qwest is also good, but pretty expensive. I also administer our Unix servers, which we use for almost all of our standard network services: POP3, SMTP, DNS, FTP, HTTP, SQL, network logging and traffic sniffing. We use Windows NT for Radius authorization, Cold Fusion, ASP and HTTPS services. We are using Windows 2000 (sigh) for Terminal server services, some SQL stuff, and for WAN multicast video services. For multicasting over our LAN, we require broadcast-quality full D1 (MPEG-2) with real-time encoding and decoding. I just purchased a Minerva Networks VNP 201. It's small (2 units fit in just 1.5 RU), and is unbelievably cool. They cost a little over $16,000.00, though. This thing does real-time encoding/decoding and multicasting of traditional NTSC/PAL/SECAM video in full, digital broadcast quality D1. Its CPU is a Motorola PowerPC 603ev, and it uses the VxWorks embedded O/S.

It's been a busy 4 months for me since my last update to this page. The system was completed and fully installed--on schedule! I'm currently putting the final touches on version 2.0. This release will contain a number of new features such as a more intuitive interface, multiple template support, secondary audio stream support, a much more robust content delivery sub-system and various other enhancements. The system has been very well received. Some of our customers over the past few months have been Disney, McDonalds, Kinkos and LMG A/V. Hopefully I will have a bit more free time over the next few weeks. If I do, I'll attempt to get some new pictures up...or, if I'm really feeling motivated, maybe I'll redesign this site. I put a good solid hour into the mess you're looking at now. :)

For the last 2 months I've been programming a time-based, dynamic media distribution control center. We call the project VIS, or Video Information System. The system will be installed and deployed later this month. What the system does (well, in particular, what the server does) is generate custom content for each of 32 different client computers, which are attached to 60" Sony 16:9 (wide screen) monitors placed throughout the facility. The actual content includes MPEG2 video, banner advertisements, real-time directional information and more. The first part the project involved creating the database backend, creating an efficient web-based data entry frontend, coding the time-based control logic and dynamic content creation (based on the playlist), and programming the actual delivery of the content to the each of the client machines. Most of it was programmed using Cold Fusion and MS VB. Thanks to Allaire for listening to my input and fixing the (admittedly) very buggy CFSCHEDULE and CFFTP tags in version 4.5 RC-1. Those tags were obviously very important to this project. UPDATE: ...and CFFTP is still horribly broken over 4 months later, just in a different way. Right now, I'm building the first 25 client computers (PIII 500's with 128 MB RAM) and the main server here at home. They are well guarded. Next week I'll be working on the directional information parser, which will be coded in Perl.

| Oh. My. God. | From the early 1980's, shortly after waking up. My impression of Einstein. |
| The FireChicken | My 1970 Firebird. I loved this car and rebuilt it from the ground up when I was in high school. I sold it in 1992 right after I bought my first new car. The Firebird was totaled 3 weeks later. |
| Practice room | This is where my band practiced in Texas. My mom didn't like the modifications we made to the garage a whole lot, so it has since been restored to its previous state by talented professionals. I believe this shot was taken in 1985. |
| Mullet-boy | On vacation, 1990. This one is really painful for me to look at. I almost didn't have enough nerve to post this shot, but it's pretty funny. |
| Grilling veggies | The early 90's on the balcony of the apartment I shared with Lisa. |
